Review of Brain on Fire (2017) by Josh S — 22 Jun 2018
IT IS NOT AN IMMEDIATE OR AN EASILY DIGESTED MOVIE, AND THAT IS THE POINT. I cringed the entire time watching this and made me feel such horrible nostalgia that I can't not applaud the purpose the director was trying for.
The reality of brain anomalies and diseases that affect the area consist of nonsensical and often irregular signs. This movie properly conveys the way someone may experience such issues, albeit a slow moving movie.
That is the point of the pacing and the way it was shot. From personal experience dealing with an issue like this, I can say that the movie decently captures that irregular feeling and understanding of issues that concern the brain and what can go wrong.
That feeling of a slow decline and anxiety makes it seem realistic, and most people who feel like this movie was too slow or boring are most likely feeling discomfort so much that they don't really comprehend the feeling of losing control of oneself.
Moretz does an amazing job and the supporting cast adds a real feel to how one may experience this issue. It even accurately portrays how doctors would approach such an issue.
