Review of Breaking the Waves (1996) by Logan M — 27 Jun 2016
About three quarters of the way in, I was left with little faith that Trier will be able to make much more of this than a glorified Twilight Zone episode. And even in retrospect, some aspects of this film are indeed lacking (e.g. the sailor ingredient). Ultimately however, between Watson's marvelous performance and that ending - alone - the film does manage a rather powerful resonance.
As does my having unexpectedly rediscoved Cartlidge's very specific type of magic and the distinct lack thereof owed to her early departure.
