Review of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) by Kai82 — 18 Jan 2020
This is a complicated rating. Yes this is written by Joss Whedon and the name Buffy is no coincidence. He sold the idea / script to the production company and later left the project because he got dissatisfied with the changes they made (Some will say they butchered his script / ideas).
He later produced the TV series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” when he had more control over (t)his project. Buffy became pop culture history, Joss Whedon became recognized and started an awesome career.
But back to the movie. This movie is actually really good for the circumstances. According to my research it had to be produced in 5 weeks. Credit were credit is deserved. It is an accomplishment to make a movie in this short time that is not garbage.
My main problem is that I watched and enjoyed the TV series first. The Buffy movie character is far away from the TV series Buffy character. This makes it awkward but I cannot blame the movie for it. The actors are solid for a movie in this price range range and you can still see the hand writing of Joss Whedon.
They even got Donald Sutherland, Luke Perry and Rutger Hauer as actors. Kristy Swanson plays a good Buffy and Rutger Hauer is a fine villain. The story is O.K. for me and delivers character development and story progression.
Again while the battles are good I am unfairly comparing them to the better fights in the TV series. Overall it is worth watching and I enjoyed it. I will warn everyone who watched the TV series first.
Because the unfair comparisons made this movie look weaker than it was and sometimes awkward.
