Review of Bugsy Malone (1976) by Jason V — 13 Sep 2017
After reading bad reviews from "professional critics" I'm fairly disgusted. This is a movie for kids. Period. First off, I'm a professional screenwriter who's worked with some of the biggest producers in the world.
I understand what great writing is, and what's expected at that level far more than some hack critics who've never written anything but reviews. I first saw Bugsy Malone as a kid and was blown away that a serious (to a 6 year old) film was made for kids.
It was my favorite movie as a kid because of it. It had everything I grew up to write as an adult; guns, violence, girls etc. That is the spirit of this film. It was not written for jaded old people, it was written for bright eyed kids still open to dreams and fantasy.
Any of those critics can feel free to send me their script and I'll give them a sea of notes as to why it is beyond horrible. Bugsy Malone should be a film that's off limits from critics this many years after release.
Good grief! The heart the film has makes up for any story flaws. But, I shouldn't even need to point that out.
