Review of Bumblebee (2018) by 'Michael S — 21 Dec 2018
The scale is not as huge as Bay's Transformers universe but this little story on the most lovable yellow robot offers something that're not seen before in the franchise. It plays safe by following the Disney method of plot arc, focusing on the built up of characters with ample amounts of heart and candid fun moments rather than just restless bombastic explosions over a long running time.
It might be a live action film that may just appeal to satisfy the critics who have been trashing Bay's previous works but the fighting sequences are forgettable and the visual effects are not as epic as those in Dark of the Moon.
Character development is the strongest in this entry thanks to more screen time on the engaging relationship between the great heroine (Hailee Steinfeld) and bumblebee itself for their changing emotional conditions while certain parts on the supporting cast may sound cheesy, the overall outcome still remains fun.
It is a charming prequel that indulges in nostalgic affection and effectively acts as a course correction for the series, a joyride and playfulness experience brought in by director Travis Knight.
