Review of Call Me by Your Name (2017) by Amanda P — 23 Dec 2017
A round of applause must be given to Timothee for his ability to act in three languages and play the piano. Armie Hammer also offers a beautiful performance. The slight drawback is that the uncomfortable nature of watching an established person and a teenager try to seduce each other.
This international production was written by James Ivory (from the famous Merchant Ivory films) with an Italian director and at least one American star. Although there is one incredible conversation between a father and son in the film, most of the story depends on the audience wanting a person who comes to work alongside a family in a professional capacity try to strike it up with what is essentially a high school student.
Although the ensemble and crew are able to persuade the audience to root for these people, I think the uncomfortable nature of it means you are never entirely drawn into the drama and therefore are left a bit indifferent or emotionally vacant when the key moments come up.
It is still worth the watch.
