Review of Capturing the Friedmans (2003) by John C — 02 Apr 2004
Capturing the Friedmans could be some of the best documentaries that I have ever seen. It is is, quite simply, outstanding. The film deals with a family, The Friedmans, from Long Island that are torn apart when the father is found with child porn and later is accused (along with the youngest son) of molestation.
There is no narration in the traditional sense but rather the film is told by the subjects with the assist of some amazing home footage taken at the time of the ordeal. This is not a happy tale and the subject matter is handled in graphic but tastful manner.
Also, the filmmakers take great pains to not take sides... both the prosectution and the defense in the case don't look good here. A very disturbing film that will stay with you long after you see it.
