Review of Chungking Express (1994) by John C — 11 Oct 2011
OK. I Dont want to sound like I'm highbrow by saying this, but "Chungking Express" has become my favourite film of the 90's. Maybe even for the fact it is the most enjoyable of the "quintessentially 90's movies".
The film has a rather "Pulp Fiction-esque" narrative, where the story and characters are somewhat disjointed, but somehow connected. In my opinion, Wong Kar-Wai has never made a bad film, yet.
..in my opinion, he's still the only director that makes enjoyable modern romance movies. Chungking - like Kar-Wai's other works - has stunning visuals and a fantastic soundtrack, which includes some of the best use of licensed music ever! Faye Wong is adorable and by far my favourite character in the film, her cover of Dreams, by the Cranberries, is especially catchy, and even BETTER then the original - she even, apparently sings it using a Irish accent, awesome, if thats true! I encourage EVERYONE to at least see this movie once.
