Review of Clear History (2014) by Sacha P — 31 Aug 2013
Contrary to what another reviewer posted, not only did a few minutes not lead to my forgiving Larry David for yet another self-indulgent exposition of his cantankerous, but left me pleading with him, virtually speaking, if he is the comic genius we believe him to be (and having co-masterminded Seinfled who can doubt that ) do find some new material.
Indeed, the first few minutes held some promise that just maybe at least some new facets to David's curmudgeonry were going to surface. The hirsute but overly candid marketing executive, Nathan Fromm, seemed just enough different from Larry of Curb Your Enthusiasm that something new and fresh seemed at least possible.
But, alas, it was just the hair. By the time the main plot begins to unfold years after Nathan shot himself in the foot, Natahn has become Rolly Davore, manservant to a rich old woman on Marrtha's Vineyard but really just Larry again.
And again, and again - while the setting and gags are transported east, we get stale repeition of the same routine wherein the big mouth Larry-Nathan-Rolly keeps screwing things up for his hopes and plans by not being able to lump life's trivia.
So, lady: we get it. It was really funny when Jerry and George played these scenarios out, initially but decreasingly tolerable on Curb Your Enthusiasm, and a one-star waste of time in this film, whose title, Larry should take as guidance for his future comedic endeavours: time to really clear history.
