Review of Clown (2014) by Jaro P — 01 Sep 2016
The one thing that mostly everyone usually is afraid of, are the typical clowns. Clowns are supposed to be goofy looking people that should make kids smile about their happiness and clumsiness. That is never the case, which they look creepy and terrifying. Even Stephens Kings It makes matters worse with the presentation of clowns. It was only a matter of time before Eli Roth produce a Clown film that at times it can be creepy and bring the thrills. The script is so bland when it comes to characters, even only having a very few characters to work on. It does make the movie a little less memorable.
Kent (Andy Powers) is a great husband and a father, who works as a realtor. His son's birthday theme is of clowns and after the clown they hired cancels at the last minute. Kent conveniently discovers a box in a house that is left from the previous owners. In the box are a clown costume, a wig and a red nose. He surprises his son by wearing the costume. At the end of the day, taking the costume off is nearly impossible. His attempt of a razor blade or a saw does not have any effect on tearing the costume off. The wig being attached and grown into his natural hair. The nose, the wife Meg (Laura Allen) was able to rip it off and accidently tearing some skin off his nose. Kent's slowly transitions into an evil menacing clown, giving him an appetite for children, and losing his mind into the demonic possession. Meg is trying to find a solution in saving her husband before he is lost completely.
Director Jon Watts did well in trying to creep us out with the clown idea and seeing a man transform into a menacing figure. He also does not hold back in killing no name characters, especially seeing kids being eaten by the clown or dismembered. Watts does create a perfect scene set up, were you know you may be squeamish like a character thinking using a razor blade to tear the costume off by getting very close to his wrist or a saw near the neck. The arcade indoor tunnel kids playground place does get thrilling when kids are being chased by this menacing character in the tunnels.
Clowns does suffer from the cliché like everything being too conveniently like Kent gets a phone call that the clown they hired cancels, and he all of a sudden is standing next to a mysterious box with the clown outfit. Also, when Kent is distancing himself in a motel and is looking like a creepy killer clown and a kid comes up to him without thinking he is a maniac stranger. Also, where is the kids parents? That leaves him wondering around at night in a motel for a long period of time. Clown is a fair horror film, creepy thrills filled with a lot of clichés.
