Review of Code 46 (2003) by Josh M — 13 Feb 2005
Doomed Lovers On The Run.
Code 46 = the guidelines regulating which men can mate with which women, based on the makeup of each person's DNA. The idea is that, in this particular future, genetic technology has advanced to the point where identity itself has become somewhat blurred.
The film obviously draws on the George Orwell themes heavily, however, it doesn't beat you over the head with the BIG BROTHER idea and it crosses between the Gattica film story and a hint of Blade Runner with out the violence. The bottom line is that CODE 46 is a love story between two people who can never fall in love.
Photographically the film is nothing short of spectacular. Visually this film moves in poetic form from locations to locations with splashing neon, blue drop hiways and coarse sand dunes as its two main characters weave thru a futuristic world attempting to run from the laws that are preventing them to love one another.
In short, like 1984's Winston and Julia, Code 46's William and Maria are doomed lovers on the run from a society in which love itself is a high-tech experiment that will program who you can love and who you can't.
CODE 46 = 8.
