The pacing is inconsistent in several segments, and the overall comedy is not as clever as it thinks it is, partly because the script blatantly pushes the main character to think he is smarter than everyone else, but by all accounts, Confess, Fletch is an entertaining and funny film, regardless of what doesn't work, because the things that do work make the experience amusing enough.
It's the kind of case where you understand that not everything has to be spectacular or memorable, but just functional and fun at the right time when it's needed.
