Review of Crimes of the Future (2022) by Bertobellamy — 15 Jul 2022
Love from anarchy; meaning from the void; evolution as a form of subversion. Since we can recall, the authorities in place have always tried to control the human body with whatever means they can. Why do those in charge are so afraid of the normal people taking control of their physical selves? In 'Crimes of the Future,' body horror legend David Cronenberg presents us with a futurist manifesto in which he devises an era free of pain and the "natural" order.
His first new film in almost a decade lures us with the promise of a body horror nightmare; instead, what we get is a meditation on how the art of body modification could be the ultimate weapon against those who try to keep the status quo whatever the cost.
There's no crime like the present, and this strange but original film reminds us of that.
