Review of Crimson Peak (2015) by Mark T — 17 Feb 2016
Liked this more than I thought I would. A paper thin plot can occasionally matter little when a film is as visually impressive as this film is. More of an old fashioned romantic ghost story than an outright horror film, I found much to enjoy here.
Sure, its predictable, takes a while to get going, the 'love' story feels forced and it lacks scares, but its clearly made by an artist with a passion for the genre. I also normally despise the use of cgi ghosts, but they're well suited to del Toro's approach, so I can go with it.
There is no question that Crimson Peak is a glowing, visually stunning tribute to gothic horrors of the 1930s and 40s.
