What works about "Cube 2: Hypercube" is the concept and the strong science fiction themes that have been added to the franchise; what doesn't is the conventional ending. This is not a remake of the first film, the entire plot is based on the title (the hypercube) and the weird events that being in such a strange maze brings.

In fact this instalment does away with the traps entirely and for that reason is more interesting than the first. It feels less like an imitation of so many other horror movies and feels like it's own original thing.

The film does a good job keeping you edge with who can be trusted and who is merely a ticking time bomb so there's a lot here that keeps you guessing. Towards the end is where the movie starts to stumble though, there is a lame love plot that comes out of nowhere and is inserted just to titillate the audience, a villain character is introduced when none is needed, a whole lot of the interesting science fiction concepts are never followed up and the very last scene makes you wonder if the whole movie wasn't ultimately pointless.

The ending is a let down, but "Cube 2: Hypercube" is more interesting that the first, has an original concept and even if you haven't seen the first one you can jump right into this and it will be a pleasant surprise.
