Review of Cutie and the Boxer (2013) by André S — 23 Feb 2014
A touching documentary following struggling New York artists Ushio and Noriko Shinohara. Ushio is preparing for a show that he hopes will reinvigorate his flagging career and Noriko is trying to find her own identity as an artist with her Cutie cartoons depicting their struggles during their 40 year marriage.
It's a fascinating study of a power struggle withiin a relationship and a study of the couple themselves. Noriko's drawings are brought to life to show how they got together and how they have survived through many problems.
