Review of Dancer in the Dark (2000) by Émile D — 05 May 2015
Re-appropriating the conventions of the musical and imbuing them with realism, Von Trier makes "Dancer in the Dark" as harsh a film as he can and, as a result, it's hard to sit through, supremely manipulative, and far too long.
Nevertheless, the proceedings are buoyed greatly by Björk's Oscar-worthy performance, the impact stemming from her immensely likable portrayal of a poor immigrant trying to support her son in a country that won't accommodate her.
