Review of Dark Shadows (2012) by Jacob B — 16 Mar 2014
Dark Shadows has a few problems. It's tonally inconsistent, unable to find a way to appeal to fans of the source material who're more willing to accept it as a parody and regular moviegoers and having one of the stranger cases of disproportionate retribution out there (It can't be! Men rejecting women was supposed to be mythical! Women rejecting men, okay.
But it's the vampire treatment for you, buddy because...she's Eva Green, I guess and Eva Green's frickin' hot). There's also a twist that's there just for the hell of it. Yes, there's foreshadowing but it's too subtle to notice and anyway, it's only for the sake of parodying soap opera twists.
The screenwriters even straight-up tell you "There's a twist. Shut up, fanboys!" Nevertheless, the visuals and set design all reek of sweet Tim Burton goodness, there are a couple of funny moments and Johnny Depp's performance actually is entertaining.
I don't think anyone will consider Dark Shadows Tim Burton's best film but I don't regret seeing this movie. It is one of his more forgettable ones, however :(.
