Review of Dave Attell: Captain Miserable (2007) by Alexander Z — 15 Mar 2011
Dave Attell will never equal the rapid-fire pace of his Comedy Central Presents comedy special (yes, I'm aware they're edited for maximum laughter), but Captain Miserable is a classic of raunchy comedy all the same.
From tsunamis to pedophilia to dog wrestling to a lost piece of excrement, Attell really is the master of the dirty joke. Carlin or Schimmel or Goldthwait or Pryor couldn't do it better. And somehow, it's still witty.
I've long appreciated Attell's skill at being very intelligent while being very base, and I feel too many people write him off as appealing to the lowest common denominator. But he's no Larry the Cable Guy.
He's far better than that.
