Review of Death on the Nile (2022) by Theredsky — 06 Apr 2022
A slight improvement over its predecessor. The reason I liked this more than the 2017 film is all down to story and presentation. The presentation isn’t great by any means but it’s better and the story after the first hour was really fun and engaging.
The one major downside about the presentation though is the green screen. It’s absolutely horrendous, obvious, and distracting. It’s kind of embarrassing at points to be honest but thankfully, it’s only in the first 30 minutes of the film.
The acting here isn’t as good as the 2017 film but the characters are more interesting. More of them feel like they have a personality and something to do although there were sections like the boulder scene being completely pointless.
Gal Gadot was very distracting but she’s only on screen for the first hour and then is gone for the rest leaving room for everyone else to shine. Kenneth Branagh gives a great performance here and it’s a major step up in quality performance wise for him from the 2017 film.
The story feels like it has consequences at points and that it’s actually leading somewhere with the characters. The mystery element was hit or miss. I could gather who did it before the halfway point but I still enjoyed watching the characters piece it all together.
I definitely like this more than the 2017 film although this is still very flawed. If you like murder mysteries then I would still recommend Knives Out over this but this is a decent option if you’ve already seen Knives Out.
