Review of Deception (2008) by Richard S — 02 Jan 2009
"I haven't felt this good since Van Halen in '97.".
That should tell you all you need to know. Despite the talent involved, this is hopelessly misguided and more significantly, incredibly dull. It is modestly interesting before the the generic swindle/thriller plot kicks in. Initially it's a plotless homage to a couple of shots in a couple of Wong Kar Wai movies. It operates on the assumption that a bit of rain, some Mies Van Der Rohe chairs, and some Kiton is enough to keep an audience's attention. There's some sort of D-level "Eyes Wide Shut" sex club, but aside from a 30 second Charlotte Rampling cameoed monologue, there's no attempt to explore it.
This may as well have been made for Cinemax.
