Review of Descent (2007) by Tero H — 30 Dec 2012
Exciting thriller, which doesn't have as much depth as one would have liked, in the way of story and characters. It could have been much more claustrophobic as well, which it failed to be. Shauna MacDonald reminded me of Sarah Michelle Gellar and the film with the creatures reminded me the final episode of her tv-series. Not bad things, of course and it was Shauna MacDonald who was also my favorite actress in the movie. However, I somehow felt that the film remained a bit hollow. Somehow, some added depth would have salvaged a lot.
This is an exciting film with better than average acting and it also has enough action to keep the thing going. I wouldn't look for a sequel though. This film was enough on this same theme. Not bad but remains slightly hollow (no pun intended), and doesn't seem to be fully completed on any level. You could do worse, though. It does have some cool moments, like the scene which is depicted up there in the poster. It also has some claustrophobia but should have more, considering how claustrophobic the film seems at first look. The monsters or creatures look human, but too much so. Their origins would have to be explored at least a little bit, since they are so human like. But nothing of the sort is done. The viewer is left hanging on an edge of a ravine, with nothing to look for support. Thus the hollow impression nearing the end of the film. But like I wrote, its not bad and you could do much worse. Nice, but I wouldn't bother to view the film twice, because its too simplistic and slightly naive, despite its few cool and exciting moments which balance out the bad ones.
