Review of Discreet (2008) by Regina R — 06 May 2011
The movie mirrors its subject by shyly and immaturely tiptoeing around the plot. The intro scenesetting with the 'men' is irrelevant - what matters is the unlikely chemistry between the whore and the client.
Perhaps she's not hard-bitten enough, perhaps he's just not credible to be SO immature. Perhaps the Souhafrican audience will recognise it better than the tougher western eurpopaeans.
It's a fascinating dialogue, but has too much cringe to be gripping or long-lasting. Doesn't drill into the subject, and the happy/moralistic ending doesn't punch hard enough. But worst of all, it presents the grim profession of sex-for-money as somehow palatable, tolerable. So many have said it better, and a grimy different tale is usually told.
