Review of Don't Look Up (2021) by Moviemitch96 — 10 Dec 2021
From director Adam McKay ('Anchorman', 'Talladega Nights', 'Step Brothers' and more recent political comedies such as 'The Big Short' and 'Vice') comes this scathing apocalyptic political satire focusing on two scientists (Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence) who discover a comet that is on a direct collision course with planet Earth that will destroy and annihilate everyone and everything.
Together, the two embark on a wide and extensive media tour to try and warn the world about its impending doom, but unfortunately the government, the president and her Chief-of-staff son (a very Trump-like Meryl Streep and Jonah Hill), and most people don't seem to care or want to listen to them.
I had mixed feelings going into this one. The premise sounded absurd (which I know was kinda the point), but I still remained skeptical about if it would be able to be pulled off effectively. But with the amount of talent that's stacked to the wall here, from a-list actors such as DiCaprio and Lawrence, along with supporting players such as Hill, Streep, Cate Blanchett, Timothee Chalamet, etc.
) along with star musicians such as Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi, you'd think even they'd be able to churn out something even halfway decent or worthwhile. But man oh man, that could NOT be further from the case! This farce of a film is an absolute cringefest from start to finish, is thoroughly unfunny and tries WAY too hard for its own good and seemingly resorts to characters screaming and shouting at each other whenever the jokes run out, and is just downright painful to sit through in so many ways.
I absolutely could not care less how socially relevant this film is supposed to be, nor how spot on it is with its commentary on our ignorance of world issues and the political climate that seemingly does little to nothing to address or fix them.
Had the film been much shorter, it could've made this mess of a film only slightly more tolerable, but at nearly two and a half hours, this film WAAAYYY overstays its welcome, not that it was welcome for very long, cause even at an hour and a half, I guarantee this film still would've been equally as grating on me, and the film's end and final act just added insult to injury with the whole ordeal.
Overall, the bottom line is this: not only is this easily my worst film of the year, it's quite honestly one of THE worst films I've seen in years! It's not funny in the slightest, runs out of jokes (if I can even call them that) within the first half hour, and completely wastes its talented cast with a horrible, aimless, and obnoxious film that thinks it's so smug and slick.
Well news flash: it's not.
