Two astronomers (Jennifer Lawrence & Leonardo DiCaprio) discover a comet headed toward Earth that will annihilate civilization. When they try to alert the President (Meryl Streep), she tosses it off for more pressing political matters.

Then they go to the media (Cate Blanchett and Tyler Perry), who are too self-absorbed and surface to care. As the scientists try to alert the world and stop the calamity, the country spirals out of control, while the politicians look the other way (down).

Social media only exacerbates matters. Yes, this conflict sounds familiar in today’s political climate and writer/director Adam McKay has masterfully made it entertaining. Like his last satire, The Big Short (my review) he uses all-out-performances, snappy editing, short scenes and clever comedy to sell his dismal message.

The entire cast is great, but Mark Rylance was especially hilarious as the ultra-nerdy tech genius. Surprisingly, at 2:25 the movie flies by, which is a testament to McKay’s smart savvy skills. NOTE: Stay thru the credits for one final gag.
