Review of Downsizing (2017) by Walter B — 01 Jan 2018
Most seem to be missing the point of this movie, focusing a gentle eye on our social narcissism of "Saving the Planet" by recycling 3D glasses. SciFi movies take a while for the set-up and the movie spends generous time for it.
Downsizing is advanced as the cure for human overpopulation. The Law of Unintended Consequences operates, being used to squash political dissent by making the protesters if not the protests, tiny. The Damon character's meeting one such victim is the start of the movie.
The dichotomy in this age is the elite building an ark against the events of nature, while the other is an attempt to raise up those afflicted by those same events. Damon initially sides with the comely, innovative and energetic elites until he realizes that social advances simultaneously mean the majority are left behind.
Damon's everyman makes his decision as well must.
