Review of Downsizing (2017) by Jeff M — 31 Jan 2018
So promising yet ultimately disappointing.
What starts as a enjoyable grown up version of Honey I Shrunk the Kids slowly runs out of steam and morphs into a climate change anti poverty propaganda broadcast complete with hippies, bongos and braids. It does have some thoughtful points such as if everybody's $200,000 is worth $12m then all you've achieved is devalued your money and nothing changes. The ending is confusing, and despite clever sets, the lack of normal sized people in the second half takes away from the theme.
If only this was the film that the trailer promised and although some may enjoy the second part of the film, this certainly wasn't the film that anyone initially paid to see.
