Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Andrew B — 31 Jul 2017
Not as great as the critics would have you believe as I fear the novelty of a "Hollywood" war movie without any Americans and a totally British subject had clouded reviewer's objectivity.
What is done well is the feeling of ordinariness of the young British squadies trying to survive against the odds and the heroic involvement of the RAF who were edited out of the historical narrative in preference to the Battle of Britain that started a couple of months later.
However the dialogue and direction of the officers is a cliched disaster and the messing of the movie timeline to give a character's POV of the key scenes is just confusing rather than innovative.
The film has spent a year in the edit suite and it shows as Christopher Nolan has been scratching his head on what to do with his masterpiece. If this film wins any awards it will be more down to the rarity of the subject than any artistic merit.
