Review of Encanto (2021) by Compi24 — 15 Feb 2022
With most Disney animated features, the intentions are usually pure, harmless and clear. Love conquers all, forgiveness is therapy, fear is pain; all that stuff can either feel pretty innocuous or downright well-meaning.
With "Encanto," however, even though it all still feels pretty benign, I think the mechanics of its resolution (without getting too much into detail) ultimately undercuts the pain inflicted upon the protagonist.
Felt like a little too easy of a wrap-up for some of the "wrong-doers" within. Ethical missteps aside, though, I still enjoyed the overall experience. It's well-structured piece, featuring a great protagonist and some unsurprisingly stellar animation.
The songs mostly do the job — none more so than "We Don't Talk About Bruno," if I'm being real — and the voice cast is to be commended for sure. The definition of "good, not great" for me, but I still can't say I regret the watch.
