Review of Every Body (2023) by Tvjerry — 06 Jul 2023
An intersex person used to be inaccurately called a hermaphrodite, but the correct definition is any individual born with sexual characteristics that don't fit the typical binary notion of male/female bodies (there are more than 30 intersex variations).
This doc introduces 4 people who had non-consensual medical interventions in an attempt to alter their gender identity. Most of the time is spent interviewing the 3 individuals who are leading the political the movement.
They discuss the harm that they've endured, both physically and emotionally, while blazing a path for acceptance and recognition. The 4th profile features a story about the landmark case of David Reimer, which in some ways is more touching than their current stories.
This is a fascinating subject and this doc does a good job of stating the case. The major points get repeated, which slows down the momentum, and the music choices can be a bit too obvious. Even so, this little-known subject is brought proudly and effectively out in the open, helping increase understanding and appreciation for all humankind.
