In "Evil Dead Rise," writer/director Lee Cronin takes the Sam Raimi/Evil Dead legacy and runs with it, merging real scares with a certain silliness that characterizes the enduring horror franchise. Departing from Raimi's pastoral cabin setting, Cronin sets the film in the stuffy confines of a Los Angeles apartment. The story follows estranged sisters Beth and Ellie as they face personal challenges and find themselves confronted with demonic forces after an earthquake reveals the Necronomicon. As the Deadites possess Ellie and wreak havoc, the fractured family becomes trapped on their floor, leading to gore and frights aplenty.

Cronin skillfully pays homage to Raimi's shooting style and pacing, capturing the essence of the original films. The film effectively blends oppressive bleakness with the horrors of being trapped and facing demonic possession. Alyssa Sutherland delivers a standout performance, fully embracing the role of a contortionist demon, stealing every scene she's in. The young cast, including Lily Sullivan and Morgan Davies, handles their roles with commendable skill.

"Evil Dead Rise" showcases Cronin's ability to create visually stunning sequences, such as the fisheye peephole shot and the breathtaking opening credit reveal. However, the film also has its drawbacks, with some inconsistencies and moments that may strain believability. While horror fans should not miss this gory delight, those with a weaker stomach or possession phobias may want to pass. Overall, "Evil Dead Rise" honors the franchise while delivering its own brand of blood-soaked greatness.
