Not many other science fiction films of recent memory is as engrossing as this hypnotic and techno-sensual thought experiment. It's strength derives from exactly that - it's engrossing concept and smooth, Fincher-esque execution and ambiance lifts it above regular big-budget VFX onslaught of over-stimulating fireworks and frenetic action.

It is a strong showcase of what you can do with a simple concept and how it may be executed by simple means. Too many aspiring sci-fi films never seem to get a solid grip on that part; be it because they don't try enough, or because they try too hard?

On top of vibrant performances by Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, Alicia Vikander and the others, the special effects are hauntingly seamless, the impeccable cinematography glows with stylish beauty and the understated, sometimes tender and increasingly haunting score by Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow plays the beats in the right places. Despite these pros, I was left with a feeling that something that essentially would make the film even more engaging got left out somehow. I feel as though that it's highest potential, due it's lofty subject matter of artificial intelligence and humanity, is slightly hindered by it's wide target audience and the demands that comes with such. Yet, it doesn't succumb to simple thrills and dizzying eyecandy that revolves around nothing that is worth our time and attention - all for the better.

If Ex Machina isn't as memorable as it aims to be, it is most certainly a pleasure to watch and talk about with like-minded moviegoers that desire stimuli of wonder and intellect rather than the senses.
