Review of Extract (2009) by Jack S — 29 Jun 2014
I guess I just have to come to the conclusion that Judge will not be able to duplicate the genius he shared with the world in Office Space. Office Space was a spot on assault of ALL things "work" -- boss, sad coworkers, pathetic coworkers, office etiquette, birthdays and the greedy piggy-wiggy who wants to make love to that last piece of cake etc.
That movie is laugh-out-loud funny in regards to work and the neighboring hotspot where the employees trickle over to eat OR get lit into because of their lack of wardrobe "flair"! Ugh ... what a horrible workplace and sad little piece of the world .
.. but what a wonderful movie it was. Judge's sophomore effort appealled to even fewer people becasue half of the jokes are simply too smart for our current generation to appreciate (Idiocracy is laugh-out-loud funny if you watch it with the correct audience).
As for Extract -- it is the MOST tame Judge film and there are very few off-color remarks. It is pretty straight-laced and that is its downfall. I expected some zany, wacky, insanely impossible situations to come up at the Extract factory .
.. but nothing out of the ordinary ever does. I don't know why this one didn't work like his others ... maybe he tried to make the central characters more tame and ordinary (and can a man driving a 7-Series BMW be whacky?) If that man is a character played by Jason Bateman -- then by all means give him EVERYTHING to work with -- he is one of the best comedic actors to re-arrive in Hollywood over these past few years.
I think he can do just about anything but he doesn't get to go crazy here ... and so there is little fun that can be Extracted from this :(.
