Review of Fading Gigolo (2013) by Panta O — 20 Oct 2014
For the most part I enjoyed this. It's an odd story and probably would have been more believable if Turturro casted someone a little more gigolo-esque because he really doesn't fit the bill. Say what you want about Woody Allen but I have always found him as a much better and funnier actor than writer and he really was great in this and it makes you want to see more from him (let's leave personal feelings out of this when discussing Allen's talent).
I would have rather seen a movie about his character honestly, he brought life to this movie every time it started to fizzle especially after this odd romance between Turturro and a younger woman, and don't get me wrong, Turturro is fine performance wise as usual but he just did not fit this character.
Sharon Stone and Sofia Vergara are great too and I thought Liev Schriber had a weird part that could have used more writing to it. Speaking of the writing, it is pretty good especially the scenes with Allen.
This is very Woody Allen-esque in tone and film style and makes you wonder if Allen ended up directing it instead. Tonya Pickens and Bob Balaban also were great in this. The music was great, once again sounding very Woody Allenish.
It's not a movie for everyone but when it works, it works.
