Review of Fanny and Alexander (1982) by Guillaume H — 17 Feb 2016
This is a fine example of Ingmar Bergman's technique. Excellently acted, written and directed, it is a period piece that holds our attention throughout. It is not a complex story, simply a dramatization of a widowed mother and her two children and how they cope with the man in their lives.
If one is looking for a perfect period drama, and doesn't mind the length of the film, you cannot go wrong with this choice. It's style and beauty is somewhat akin to Kubrick's "Barry Lyndon", except with subtitles.
