Review of Fanny and Alexander (1982) by David C — 23 Sep 2008
Holy freaking crap. Over 5 hours of a very dull story entirely in Swedenese or whatever the Swedish language is called over in Swedland. 2 kids and their parents have a mighty clan and are so very happy.
Dad dies. Mom married a stuffy old non-fun guy. Kids and mom are forced to stay with non-fun guy and his non-fun clan. That's the jist. To me, the fact that it was directed by Ingar Bergman is pure hypocrasy.
His skills as a director are unfathomable, but you certainly can't count on him to make a fun, enjoyable movie. This one is no exception. And being 5 1/2 hours in Swedenese doesn't help either.
