Review of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) by Jason M — 14 Dec 2018
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
Initial Reaction: Just what crimes are we talking about?
Main Characters.
Newt Scaramanga: Heâ(TM)s the wizard with the strange pets. Heâ(TM)s played by Eddie Redmayne.
Grindelwald: Heâ(TM)s the wizard who does these crimes. Heâ(TM)s played by Johnny Depp.
Plot Summary.
This story focuses on the ongoing conflict between wizards and Muggles (humans who donâ(TM)t cast magic). There are wizard who want to rule the land and use Muggles as slave labor, and there are those who want peaceful coexistence between the two groups.
In this conflict are Newt and Gridlewald. Newt is given the task to stop Grindewald from doing â" whatever heâ(TM)s doing.
But the plans put forth are extremely complicated and it requires the help of many, many wizards (and one Muggle.).
SOCRING.
Main Characters.
These two work very well as two sides of a coin. They both go about their business with Grindelwald hatching his evil plans and Newt trying to stay neutral in the upcoming fight. SCORE: 9.
Supporting Cast.
Thereâ(TM)s a lot of other characters in the film and keeping them straight can be tough. But some of the things they do are interesting, and their characters are fleshed out quite a bit. SCORE: 8.
Plot.
This is one film that I found tough to follow. There are several plot threads in this film that involve many characters interacting with one another. This gets to the point where I wonder just who the leading character is and who Iâ(TM)m supposed to root for. SCORE: 7.
Originality.
This film does do a lot of the stuff you find in the previous film (and other Harry Potter films). But the plot is much more complex than the other films (which may or may not be good). SCORE: 7.
Violence Factor.
Several characters get blasted by magic â" but we donâ(TM)t see what the spell actually does (which is a cheat). But near the near the end, a whole lot of spellcasters get obliterated onscreen.
Problem is, they fudged the combat magic to make it do whatever they need it to do. SCORE: 7.
Other Moral Issues.
This film is about who you trust and team up with and what you stand for. Sounds easy on paper, but it gets really complicated really fast. SCORE: 9.
Final Score ( out of 60): 47 % Score: 78.33%.
Itâ(TM)s fun to watch, but the story can get confusing at times.
