Review of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) by Michael C — 28 Dec 2018
I went into this movie really excited, having loved the first instalment. It felt to me as though Crimes of Grindelwald almost wilfully threw away everything that made Fantastic Beasts 1 so much fun to watch.
There was no warmth here, and no whimsy. There were practically no fantastic beasts, come to that. What we got instead was a retread of Harry versus Voldemort, with Johnny Depp's fatuous, mannered Grindelwald standing in for He Who Must Not be Named.
Everything was overblown, nothing really felt like it mattered and nothing - nothing at all - got resolved. That last point particularly exasperated me. I expected to see a story that was complete in itself, even if it was part of a franchise.
What I got was an episode in a serial. Or maybe a trailer for an episode in a serial. Two stars because there was some lovely cinematography. There wasn't much else, really.
