Review of Far from the Madding Crowd (2015) by Martha G — 30 May 2015
Went expecting this to be not as good as original film, and overwhelming met my expectations. The movie was a sappy love story about a cute independent woman who doesn't want to be tied down and finally she sees the love light. The original movie was full of people struggling with love, some evilly, some egostically, the soldier and the gentlemen had strong tinges of madness. The shepherd who was not in the orginal very much, nor kept telling how he felt, kept his head and heart in check. Julie Christie's beauty was part of the plot. The soldier was pasty faced and a wimp. Terence Stamp was full of egotistical virility, you could see why she felt addicted to him. Micheal Sheen apparently was directed to play this very polite, Peter Finch portrayal was on the verge of stalking her.
If you like a milk toast love story, by all means. But this is not the complicated study of love/lust and madness. "Madding" def: frenzied, insane. This movie was sweet......and did not include any depth of the book or the original.
