The book is a classic. This movie is a classic dud. While major plot points are hit, the connective tissue is missing. Lost is the intelligence and wit in which Hardy skewers England's prevailing social hierarchy and mores.
Go see "Mad Max" instead; a thrill ride, with social commentary to boot.
