Review of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (2005) by Mjs M — 06 Aug 2009
When I?m not watching an obscene number of movies (or doing something useful with my time) I?m indulging my other hobby, video games. Just recently I finally got around to beating the final boss of Final Fantasy VIII after trying for ten long years (long story).
Anyway I followed through with the momentum of that victory to finally play all the way through FFVII as well and it was quite a good experience. Naturally the next thing to do was watch this direct to DVD CGI sequel to the classic game.
The movie will be of no interest to anyone who hasn?t played the game; it picks up from the game?s story and doesn?t stop to catch anybody up. So basically this is a very niche product that plays directly to the fans and tries really hard to give them everything they want.
There is a ton of over the top Matrix-ish action in this thing and most of it is pretty enjoyable. There?s a lot of in jokes and fan service to be found as well. The story is not particularly insightful and all of the supporting characters here are short changed except for Tifa and maybe Vincent.
So for what this is, it?s pretty effective.
