Review of First Man (2018) by Amanda J — 07 Jan 2019
Dark, gloomy, depressing. It doesn't do the tale of the moon landing any justice. It's also way too unhistorical. The Apollo 1 fire is largely glossed over (and done wrong), characters are portrayed in ways they were not IRL, and Gosling is not Armstrong. Worse, the way it is filmed is full of amateurish close-ups, so close that I had the feeling the director would have gone up Gosling's nose if he could.
Bottom line: From The Earth To The Moon this is not. Apollo 13 this is not. Not once does this movie make you say "We're going to the moon! Yeah!" Instead it's "We're going to the moon, we're all going to die.".
What a waste.
Plus points: there are a few shots of the Apollo 11 launch that are really good. Without those this would be a 0 point movie.
