Review of First Reformed (2018) by Greg N — 29 Dec 2018
The National Board of Review was right for choosing this film to be one of the best of 2018. It's a very dramatic and heavy tale on daring themes like commercialization, environmental problems and terrorism, as well as faith.
A very innovative flick, the camera shots are prolongued and almost completely still, which is very creative, in my opinion. It gives a realisitc, but also theater-like look to it. And we have two very strong performances from Amanda Seyfried, and especially Ethan Hawke.
It's a slow-burning, and yet, captivating film, and while it won't appeal to a very large audience, for sure, director Paul Schrader has done an impressive job on this flick. First Reformed is one of those rare non-mainstream films that are not to miss, with an ending that I was not expecting.
