Review of First Reformed (2018) by Lee M — 13 Jun 2018
It's fascinating to think about Paul Schrader and what must be going through that head of his. I look at "First Reformed" as a companion piece to "Taxi Driver" as their plots are similar: Unhappy, solitary, philosophically struggling man thinks throughout a movie about the point of it all.
Both Travis Bickle and First Reformed's Reverend Ernst Toller struggle ... and struggle ... and obsess ... and, in the end, try to take matters into their own hands. The biggest surprise here is Cedric the Entertainer in the bleakest film he's ever been in.
By FAR. Paul Schrader must be somewhat happy in life. I can't imagine holding that same angst around for 42 years. Either way, Schader's back in top form. Bravo.
