Review of First Reformed (2018) by Aidan D — 13 Jun 2018
A movie with a genius plot with great characters and an amazing performance, that got it's points about martyrdom, insanity, and global warming across perfectly well. This is why, and here's my problem with this movie, the "flying" scene, which looked terrible by the way, did not need to be included.
It was completely unnecessary and destroyed the mood the movie worked so hard to establish. If Schrader's point was a ball he was trying to toss to the audience, with that scene he threw it over our heads and broke the window.
[SPOILER] I also disliked the ending. While I understand where Schrader was coming from, it still felt out of place and forced. It would have flowed so much better if he'd just drank the Drano. If it weren't for these two scenes, I would've given this a five star rating.
