I can't understand why anyone would take pleasure from an (admittedly, wealthy) unfortunate's delusions. Yet most everyone in the auditorium laughed - loudly - whenever the title character "sang." This mean spiritedness, which the script seems to encourage, seems a reflection of the times.

I finally had enough and left.
