Review of Funny Games (1997) by Sylvain F — 24 Oct 2008
I thought I was going to enjoy this one... but no, and maybe it's because I had high expectations from The Piano Teacher and Cache. I still liked the acting, the shots, some of the scenes and direction, etc.
.. but there was something so judgmental and pompous about the whole thing. I understand its whole "are you entertained you filthy violence hungry audience?" approach mixed with the "fuck you, I'm not gonna show you the violence and I'm gonna be artsy about it too" approach but sometimes it got way too preachy and almost insulting.
That last bit of space-time business was difficult to swallow not because of it happening but more because of the outcome and how it's almost like Haneke is saying "it's your fault, audience".
As if consuming violent images creates actual violence, when in reality, those images are only a mirror.
