Review of Gerald's Game (2017) by Johnbobs1 — 28 Feb 2021
Gerald's Game has a simple enough basic plot, but it's a very emotionally deep watch. I can't say I "enjoyed" it as such, but found myself glued to the screen throughout. To say that Jessie is a well thought out character with a well fleshed out backstory is an understatement.
It's a film full of heavy metaphor too in its secondary cast:Gerald, the dog and the ghoulish presence all symbolise malevolent memories and a psychological barrier that Jessie has to overcome. The ghoul unfortunately turns out to be a real character, which although sinister perhaps chips away at the deeper nature of the plot.
It's also not a film I would go back and watch and not a film that was really to my taste, though admittedly very well made, thought out and acted.
