Review of Ghost in the Shell (2017) by James C — 07 Jul 2018
Cyberpunk, colourful science fiction sporting visually distracting & overkill effects that detract, and distract unnecessarily from the stories overall concept. Effects cant hide the fact that the film lacks depth.
Visually sweet in parts... with holograms and enhanced humans & notably some disturbing undertones in a few places mean that admittedly at times scenes were tantalizing to watch. However, digressions from the original plus way too many CGI effects only mean that the film is ok.
Scarlett Johansson attempts and pulls off the cyber/human hybrid well... with both a performance that is simultaneously devoid of, and maintains a level of emotion, I can't help though compare Pilou Asbæk to David from The Lost Boys... Except David was far cooler!
