Review of Ghost Rider (2007) by James T — 28 Jun 2018
Nicolas Cage was not the issue here, it is Johnson in the writing and directing position, he does exactly what he did wrong with Daredevil. The characters are paper thin and just eye candy, every time Mendes is on the screen she is stunning, just a fantasy character to play the damsel in distress.
Cage never gels the way he should, the sequel attempted to dial up the weirdness but the material lacks the strength for him to disappear into. Ghost Rider is very one dimensional, you only learn snippets of information and this is with an opening narration.
This is bad filmmaking and even worse, it is a terrible comic book film adaption of an interesting concept. I wish Norrington and Goyer made the film after Blade, that is a visionary concept, not the film we ended up with.
This is designed to play for the masses and it does not work. You cannot turn a horror film into a crowd friendly film, it robs the audience and inspired storytellers from boarding the project. The film is narratively weak and hits all the glossy issues Daredevil had, style over substance.
